Composing and singing epic poetry praising the heroic deeds of mortal warriors, especially in cattle-raids, is one of the oldest Indo-European traditions, and perhaps its most fundamental. War was the very heart of the Indo-European world, and those who did well in it were like Gods, worthy of exaltation.
